So... Today I decided to try public transportation to get to work. I woke up at around 5:45am after hitting the snooze bar a few times. Got up, took a shower, did my hair, searched for clean clothes, and got out of the door by 6:50am. Hoofed it to the train station and arrived at 7:15am. Pulled a $20 from the ATM, got my ticket for $12.50 and got on the train leaving at 7:22am
There is no direct train between New Haven and Darien, so I have to connect at South Norwalk after waiting about 15 minutes. Once in Darien, I catch the bus to the office. I arrive at 8:49 on the dot.
Two hours of commute time each way. 63 minutes of my commute is via train. A little less than half of that is waiting in South Norwalk and waiting for the bus in Darien. It costs about $15 a day and that is not with a monthly ticket for either the bus or the train.
I've computed out the cost of driving using the AAA numbers and it's about $45 a day to drive my car round trip, but only takes me and hour. That is still more expensive than the train.
I get a decent workout walking two miles in about 25 minutes twice a day (That's around 5 miles per hour, I think). So if I knock off the 25 minute each way from my commute, it becomes one hour and 35 minutes, which is my commute time if there is an accident or just a lot of traffic prior to exit 16 or 15 on I-95.
Here are the pros of taking the train:
I get a good walk in the morning and evening.
Cheaper in the long run.
Lessens my carbon footprint.
Less stress.
I can get work done on the train.
Cons:
Trains are old and f*&%ing disgusting, especially if there is a bathroom in the same car.
Trains are heated in the summer and air conditioned in the winter
Have about 25 minutes of standing around with sweet F.A. to do during the commute waiting either for a connecting train or bus.
If I'm even 2 seconds late for the train, I'm screwed.
More than a few people on the train have a different definition of acceptable speaking volume than I do.
Pros of driving:
The Cadillac is really comfortable and fun to drive.
I can sleep a little later
If I'm a little late, I can make up for time. V8's are wonderful for that.
I'm not stuck to the train line after work.
12 CD changer with a Bose sound system. There are sub woofers under the seats.
Cons of Driving:
Orange Street during rush hour... especially around Nica's Market
I-91 South during rush hour.
I-95 South during rush hour, especially around Bridgeport.
Gas is expensive and not getting cheaper.
I need to use premium in the Caddy.
The Cadillac is really expensive to fix and maintain.
Most other drivers suck and that causes me stress.
So I would say the overall, commuting using public transportation is pretty decent. It would even be better if Jodi Rell kept her promise to get us new trains by 2008. She's a lazy political hack of a governor, but I'm sure you knew that by now.

This is a great story about how people are bypassing the useless federal government and doing things for themselves by printing and circulating their own money!
This story is awesome!

My betrothed and I are hosting a Mad Tea Party at The Blue Pearl in New Haven, CT on Saturday
June 13th at 4pm. I've talked to the management and the chef and there will be a prix fix menu for the event including things like cucumber sandwiches and other tea time favorites.
Outrageous dress is STRONGLY encouraged. Raid you grandmother's closet! Raid the local Goodwill and Salvation Army! But the best place in town is Fashionista Vintage & Variety at 33 Church St in New Haven.
I will be posting pictures from last year's party to give you inspiration.
More details as the come! Mark your calendars NOW!
DISCLAIMER: We will not be held responsible for butter and breadcrumbs in your pocket watch. In fact, we highly recommend that you do NOT use a butter knife to apply butter to your pocket watch as it will not suit the works, even if it is the best butter.

Is anybody else getting uncomfortable with how much power the Obama administration has over GM?
Henderson... in his first news conference since succeeding Rick Wagoner, who resigned at the request of the Obama administration over the weekend.

I went shopping this weekend. 50% cashmere suit jackets at Lord & Taylor... And I want wingtips from Brooks Brothers... what the hell is happening to me?
...and I really wish I hadn't. It was boring and pointless. It wasn't even remotely funny. I would honestly say that it was one of the worst movies ever made.
Seriously. Really bad. Awful!
